TURKEY, Central or Eastern Anatolia. Circa. AV 5 Altın(?) Medal (30mm, 11.23 g, 12h). Turkic horseman, holding whip or spear, right on horseback; stylized vegetation below / Figure with four oxen plowing (or driving them) right; TA(?) monogram below; pseudo-legend in two lines above. VF, some marks, slightly wavy flan. An unusual medal. Includes older Spink envelope, written “Anafolian (
sic) Gold Fertility Talisman”.
From the collection of Dr. Lawrence A. Adams.
The obverse of this unusual medal, featuring the Turkic horseman, is a common type on the coinage of Rum and Armenia. The reverse appears to derive from an ancient type, depicting the plowing of the pomerium.
