TURKEY, Central or Eastern Anatolia. Circa. AV 5 Altın(?) Medal (30mm, 11.23 g, 12h). Turkic horseman, holding whip or spear, right on horseback; stylized vegetation below / Figure with four oxen plowing (or driving them) right; TA(?) monogram below; pseudo-legend in two lines above. VF, some marks, slightly wavy flan. An unusual medal. Includes older Spink envelope, written “Anafolian (sic) Gold Fertility Talisman”.

From the collection of Dr. Lawrence A. Adams.

The obverse of this unusual medal, featuring the Turkic horseman, is a common type on the coinage of Rum and Armenia. The reverse appears to derive from an ancient type, depicting the plowing of the pomerium.
