AFGHANISTAN, Barakzais. Shir 'Ali. First reign, AH 1280-1283 / AD 1863-1866. AV “Rupee” (23mm, 12.10 g, 9h). Kabul mint. Dated AH 1280 (AD 1863/4). Cf. Album T3165 (for silver rupee of the same type); cf. KM 502 (same). Near EF, ex mount. Extremely rare.

From the collection of Dr. Lawrence A. Adams, purchased from Stephen Album, October 1979.

To quote from Dr. Adams’ notes: “This coin is unpublished and possibly unique. In view of its full-flan, weight, and date, it is probably a presentation piece announcing the rulers accession to the throne. Almost all the presentation pieces are found in mounted condition as their foremost purpose was to be worn by the leading amirs of the kingdom as a sign of their exalted position. As political situations changed, they often found their way into circulation along with ordinary coins.”
