361, Lot: 23. Estimate $750.
Sold for $450. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

Zeno. Second reign, AD 476-491. AV Solidus (21mm, 4.53 g, 6h). Constantinople mint, 1st officina. Pearl-diademed, helmeted, and cuirassed bust facing slightly right, holding spear and shield / Victory standing left, holding long, jeweled cross; star to right; TA//CONOB. RIC X 927; Depeyrot 112/1; cf. Lacam pl. 55, 24-5 (Ticinum mint under Theodoric). Near EF, light marks, graffiti (“C” above “T”) on both obverse and reverse. Rare.

From the collection of Dr. Lawrence A. Adams. Ex Peus 307 (9 May 1983), lot 437.

This issue has long been given to Thesssalonica due to the “T” in the reverse legend, but both finds and the large number of officina signing the coins (10 total) support an attribution to the Constantinople mint.
