ETHIOPIA, Ethiopian Empire. Haile Selassie. First reign, 1930-1936. AV Werk (21mm, 5.50 g, 12h). Addis Ababa mint. Dated EE 1923 (1930). Bust left set on laurels / St. George slaying the Dragon. Gill Y29; KM 21; Friedberg 28. Near EF, light marks and rim bruises. Lustrous.

This and the following ½ werk were part of Haile Selassie’s plan to reform the Ethiopia’s monetary system with the introduction of gold coinage. The new coinage was abandoned, however, following the financial crisis of 1931, after which many countries abandoned the gold standard.
