Heraclius, with Heraclius Constantine. 610-641. AV “Solidus” (18mm, 1.87 g, 12h). Contemporary imitation of a Constantinople mint issue. Crowned and draped facing busts of Heraclius and Constantine; highly degraded legends around / Cross potent set on three steps; highly degraded legends around. VF, wavy flan, light scrape on obverse, evidence of prior mount at 12 o’clock.

From the collection of Dr. Lawrence A. Adams. Ex Classical Numismatic Group 41 (19 March 1997), lot 2380.

In CNG 41 this coin was tentatively catalogued as an issue of the Avars, but the drastically light weight and evidence of mounting at 12 o’clock on the obverse suggests that it was struck for use as a jewelry piece rather than as a circulating coin. It is difficult to place with any certainty.
