Sold for $220. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

KINGS of THRACE, Macedonian. Lysimachos. 305-281 BC. AR Drachm (18mm, 3.86 g, 6h). In the types of Alexander III of Macedon. Lysimacheia mint. Struck circa 299/8-297/6 BC. Head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin / Zeus Aëtophoros seated left; in left field, lion forepart left above monogram; monogram below throne. Thompson 6 var. (monogram in left field); Price L1 var. (same); Müller 13. VF, toned, porous. Very rare.

From the Nicholas Sicurella Collection.

This issue does not appear in Thompson, but, as noted by the author, that article did not include all the known lifetime issues, just those arranged by Newell in the ANS trays. It is more perplexing that Price omitted it, as it appears in Müller, and has the exact same control marks as Price 1215, a stater in the name of Alexander at Lysimacheia. Nonetheless, it should be noted that the representation of the monogram for Price 1215 is incorrect, as demonstrated by illustrations of that issue. The monogram is clear on this drachm. This is the only issue in the name of Lysimachos at Lysimacheia that has the same control marks as any of those in the name of Alexander.
