CAROLINGIANS. Louis 'le Pieux' (the Pious). As Emperor Louis I, 814-840. AR Denier (20mm, 1.52 g, 10h). Class 1. Arelatum (Arles) mint. Struck 814-819. + HLVDOVVICVS IMP ΛVG, laureate and draped bust right / + ARELATVM, two-towered city gate. Coupland, Money, Class I, 1; Depeyrot 59; M&G 437; MEC 1, –. VF, toned, some scrapes and peck marks under tone, flan a little wavy. Very rare.
