PTOLEMAIC KINGS of EGYPT. Ptolemy X Alexander I & Kleopatra Berenike. 101-88 BC. AR Tetradrachm (25mm, 13.39 g, 12h). Alexandreia mint. Dated RY 26 (89/8 BC). Diademed bust of Ptolemy I right, wearing aegis / Eagle standing left on thunderbolt; L KC (date) to left, ΠA to right. Mørkholm, “Ptolemaic coins and chronology: the dated silver coinage of Alexandria,” MN 4, obv. die A1; Svoronos –; SNG Copenhagen 374. Good VF, toned.

From the Demetrios Armounta Collection. Ex CNG Inventory 893419 (April 2011).

Mørkholm demonstrated through die analyses of the coinage of Ptolemy X and Ptolemy IX Soter II that the latter was recalled to Alexandreia rather early in 88 BC following Ptolemy X’s expulsion from the city. Thus, the date of this issue can be condensed to the waning months of Ptolemy X’s hold on the mint, as the Alexandreian’s frustration over their ruler was dangerously nearing its boiling point.
