Research Coins: Electronic Auction

325, Lot: 109. Estimate $1000.
Sold for $2500. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

THRACE, Byzantion. Circa 100-90 BC or later. AV Stater (21mm, 8.21 g, 12h). In the name and types of Lysimachos. Possible Celtic imitation. Period of the Mithradatic Wars. Diademed head of the deified Alexander right, with horn of Ammon / Athena Nikephoros seated left, left arm resting on shield, spear in background; uncertain control (Є?) to inner left, BY on throne, ornate trident in exergue. Apparently unpublished. Good VF, two die cracks on the reverse, light scratches.

The four Byantion staters being offered show a devolution of style. This crude coin seems to share the same controls as the previous lot.
