Unpublished Maximinus Follis

318, Lot: 802. Estimate $100.
Sold for $180. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

Maximinus II. AD 310-313. Æ Follis (24mm, 5.66 g, 12h). Heraclea mint. Struck AD 312. IMP C GAL VAL MAXIMINVS P F INV AVG, laureate head right / IOVI CONS ERVATORI, Jupiter standing left, holding globe and scepter; (wreath)//SMHTΔ. RIC VI –. Good VF, mostly brown patina with a trace of silvering, reverse strike a bit soft.

An apparently unrecorded issue for the mint of Heralcea. This long obverse legend is recorded for Maximinus for a number of issues between 310 and 312 from the mint of Heraclea. Two issues with the IOVI CONSERVATORI reverse type are recorded in RIC, one with the mint mark HTA (RIC 64) and one with HTA with a wreath in the left field (RIC 65-67). In 312, the mint mark was changed to SMHT with a wreath in the left field and an officina letter in the right field, but the reverse legend becomes IOVI CONSERVATORI AVGG (RIC 68-72). This mint mark variety with SMHT and a wreath in the left field and the officina letter in the exergue is not recorded at all in RIC and the reverse legend is not recorded for any issue with SM as part of the mint mark.
