BAKTRIA, Indo-Greek Kingdom. Philoxenos Aniketos. Circa 125-110 BC. AR Tetradrachm (26mm, 9.72 g, 12h). BAΣIΛEΩΣ ANIKHTOY ΦΙΛOΞENOY, diademed heroic bust left, seen from behind, wearing crested helmet adorned with bull's horn and ear, aegis on shoulder, brandishing spear with right hand / Maharajasa apadihatasa Philasinasa in Kharosthi, Philoxenos, in military attire, on horse rearing right on ground line; monogram to upper left. Bopearachchi 9A corr. (monogram); Bopearachchi & Rahman –; SNG ANS 1198 var. (control marks). Near EF, toned, traces of deposits. Extremely rare with this monogram.

Bopearachchi’s reading of the monogram is based on the Haughton coin (Sotheby, 30 April 1958, lot 459), which he lists as the sole example of the type. Unfortunately, the coin is double-struck, and thus the monogram is not clear at all. The present coin, struck from the same dies as the Haughton piece, corrects the reading in Bopearachchi.
