LUCANIA, Poseidonia. Circa 470-445 BC. AR Nomos (18mm, 7.97 g, 12h). Poseidon advancing right, wielding trident overhead; ΣΕΙΛV or MEΓVΛ to left / Bull standing left in circular incuse. SNG ANS –; SNG Copenhagen Supp. 50 corr. (reading of obv. legend; same dies); HN Italy 1114 note. Good Fine, toned, scattered marks, graffiti on reverse. Rare issue.

From HN Italy (p. 109): “The letters usually read as seilu on the obverse of an issue towards the end of the period have been taken to refer to the river Silaros (mod. Sele), but M. Guarducci reads megul and suggests that these may be the opening letters of the name of the oecist of Posidonia (MEΓYΛOΣ, MEΓYΛΛOΣ, or MEΓYΛΛIAΣ).”
