ASIA MINOR, Uncertain. Circa 500 BC. AR Tetartemorion (7mm, 0.15 g). Head left, wearing close-fitting cap(?) / Incuse punch. VF, edge split.

This crude style head is perplexing. It resembles to a certain extent the female heads wearing a tight-fitting cap (if indeed that is to be found on the current coin) probably struck at Phokaia, but sometimes given to an uncertain Ionian mint or simply to a mint in Asia Minor. This denomination, however, is absent from the standard references for that series. Alternatively, it recalls heads of Apollo seen on Kolophon’s early fractions, although there the god is invariably shown with his distinctly Archaic hairstyle of which there is no indication on the present tetartemorion.
