Extremely Rare Satrapal Issue

291, Lot: 89. Estimate $150.
Sold for $400. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

IONIA, Achaemenid Period. Uncertain satrap. Circa 350-333 BC. AR Diobol (9mm, 0.82 g, 3h). Klazomenai or Leukai mint(?). Head left, wearing satrapal headdress / Swan standing left, head right. Winzer 11.5 (Autophradates). VF, toned, porous. Extremely rare - perhaps the fourth known.

Winzer knew of only three examples at the time of his study, two of which appeared at auction: Peus 360 (27 April 1999), lot 204 (Artabazos, 366-352 BC); CNG 60 (22 May 2002), lot 734 (Persian general Tachos?, circa 350 BC). To that can be added CNG 88 (14 September 2011), lot 329 (as currently cataloged).
