INDIA, Kushan Empire. Kanishka II. Circa AD 225-240. AV Dinar (20mm, 7.94 g, 12h). Mint V (E). 4th emission. Kanishka standing facing, head left, sacrificing over altar to left and holding trident / OhÞO, ithyphallic Siva with three pronounced heads standing facing, holding diadem and trident; behind, the bull Nandi standing left; tamgha to upper left. MK 634 var. (without pronounced second and third heads; obv. die 21); Donum Burns 285 var. (same; same obv. die). Good VF. Rare variety.

The figure of Siva is quite distinct from those in the standard references. Whereas the standard coinage shows a schematic Siva with hair flowing down the sides of his facing head, here we find a more dynamic and athletic looking figure. The most remarkable difference, however, is the presence of the prominent second and third heads on the current coin, clearly visible in profile to either side of the facing head.
