Nikopolis, Lower Moesia. Caracalla. 198-217. Triassarion (Bronze, 26mm, 11.04 g 1), Aurelius Gallus, governor, 202-205. ΑΥ Κ Μ ΑΥΡ ΑΝΤΩΝΕΙΝΟC Laureate head of the youthful Caracalla to right. Rev. ΥΠ ΑΥΡ ΓΑΛΛΟΥ ΝΙΚΟΠΟΛΙΤΩΝ ΠΡΟC Youthful Herakles standing right, his lion skin wrapped around his left arm and with with his right hand holding his club, which rests on the ground behind him. AMNG 1551. A remarkably nice example, perfectly struck, very well preserved and with a fine brown patina. Extremely fine.

From the M Collection, ex Gorny & Mosch 175, 9 March 2009, 174.

This coin and the two following lots were issued while Caracalla was co-emperor with his father Septimius Severus, and they display quite varying styles of portraiture. The remaining coins of Caracalla, lots 169-178, all date to his sole reign, and their close adhesion to the Imperial portraits on the coinage minted in Rome is remarkable.
