Triton XV, Lot: 1866. Estimate $1000.
Sold for $1600. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

NORMAN. William I 'the Conqueror'. 1066-1087. AR Penny (19mm, 1.39 g). Paxs type (BMC viii). Glaeweceaster (Gloucester) mint; Sigelac, moneyer. Struck circa 1083-1086. + PILLEL(M R)EX, crowned facing bust, holding scepter; trefoil on shoulder / + SILΛC ON GLPECT, cross pattée; letters of P Λ X S in annulets within quarters. SCBI 19 (Gloucester), 124 (same dies); BMC -; North 848; SCBC 1257. Good VF, toned. A very interesting minter’s error, featuring a flip over double strike with each side of the coin almost perfectly mirroring one another. Very rare thus.
