THESSALY, Koinon of Thessaly. temp. Nero. AD 54-68. Æ Tetrassarion (32mm, 16.29 g, 1h). Laouchos, strategos. EIPHNH ΣEBAΣTH ΘEΣΣAΛΩN, draped bust of Eirene right, wearing wreath of grain ears and olive branch; all within laurel wreath / [Λ]AOVXOV ΣTP[A-T]HΓOV, horse standing right, its reins held in right hand of Thessalia, standing facing, [holding grain ear and poppy in left hand]. Burrer Em. 2 (of Nero), Series 2, Grp. 1, 59 (A21a/R42); RPC 1448. Near VF, attractive dark green patina, extremely rare.

Acquiring a decent specimen of the large denomination with the female portrait proved to be extremely difficult; when finally one came along, the asking price almost made this writer decline the offer. It would be a pity though not to have a nice specimen of this rarity in the catalogue, so the financial sacrifice was made. One is left wondering if the hammer price will be anywhere near the acquisition cost...
