Thessalian League. Lot of 2 coins.

Triton XV, Lot: 906. Estimate $100.
Sold for $900. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

Lot of 2 coins.

(906.1) THESSALY, Thessalian League. Mid – late 1st century BC. Æ Dichalkon (18mm, 4.44 g, 12h). Themisto..., magistrate. Helmeted bust of Athena right, wearing aegis; ΘEMIΣTO to left, unclear letters to right / [ΘEΣΣ]-A-ΛΩ-N, horse trotting right. Not found in the consulted references. Good Fine, green patina; extremely rare, possibly unique (?).

It is quite likely that the magistrate here is the same Themistogenes that appears on the League’s late didrachms (see lots 883.1 and 883.2 above) and is dated to the mid 40’s BC.

(906.2) THESSALY, Thessalian League. Mid – late 1st century BC. Æ Dichalkon (17mm, 5.16 g, 12h). Philokrates, magistrate. Helmeted bust of Athena right, wearing aegis; ΦIΛOKPA-T[OYΣ] to right and left / ΘEΣ/ΣA-ΛΩ-N, horse trotting right. Not found in the consulted references. Near VF, dark green patina; extremely rare variety.

The style of the horse on the reverse of this coin is close to some issues of the silver drachms with the magistrate AΓA... on the obverse (see lots 892.3 and 892.4 above). See also Nomos 4, 1387 where ASW dates that magistrate to the 3rd quarter of the first century BC.
