(905.1) THESSALY, Thessalian League. Late 2nd – mid 1st century BC. Æ Dichalkon (18mm, 5.74 g, 12h). Mnesimachos, magistrate. Helmeted head of Athena right; MN-HCIMA-XOV clockwise around from top / ΘEΣ/ΣAΛΩ-N, horse trotting right; grain ear to right. Lindgren III 107a (this coin). Good Fine, green patina, worn through at highest points; rare.

Ex Henry C. Lindgren Collection, 107a, from whom this coin was purchased, October 1994 ($200).

Helmeted head of Athena right; IΠΠO above / ΘEΣ/ΣAΛ[Ω-N], horse trotting right. Not found in the consulted references. Good Fine, brown and red patina; die break on obverse; very rare.


(905.3) THESSALY, Thessalian League. Late 2nd – mid 1st century BC. Æ Dichalkon (16mm, 5.80 g, 11h). Philo..., magistrate. Helmeted head of Athena right; ΦIΛO above / ΘEΣ/ΣA-Λ-Ω-N, horse trotting right. SNG Alpha Bank 354. Near VF, brown and tan patina; edge scrape at 12 o’clock reverse.

The obverse letters on this coin give the impression that the engraver was not sure what name to inscribe or that he was in a great hurry (or both).

This coin may be from the same magistrates who signed trichalka as Philok... and Asor... (see Lot 901.1, above)

Helmeted head of Athena right; KYΛ above, [ΛOY below?] / ΘEΣΣ/[A]-ΛΩ-N, horse trotting right. Not found in the consulted references. Near VF, green patina, brown high points; scarce to rare.

Helmeted bust of Athena right, wearing aegis; [KYΛ or ITA above], ΛOY below / ΘEΣ/ΣAΛΩN, horse trotting right. Not found in the consulted references. Good Fine, rough green patina; scarce to rare.
