(881.1) THESSALY, Thessalian League. Mid – late 1st century BC. AR Stater (19mm, 6.13 g, 12h). Nikolaos and Gorgias, magistrates. Head of Zeus right, wearing oak wreath / ΘEΣΣA/ΛΩN, Athena Itonia striding right, hurling spear held in her right hand, shield on her left arm; NIKO-ΛAOΣ above spear, NI in inner right field, Γ-OP/ΓI-A/Σ across lower central field. McClean 4928, pl. 179, 8 var. (division of Gorgias’ name); Klose p. 341, 15 var. (same). VF, deeply toned and well struck.

Head of Zeus right, wearing oak wreath / ΘEΣΣA/ΛΩN, Athena Itonia striding right, hurling spear held in her right hand, shield on her left arm; NIKO-ΛAOΣ above spear, N-I in inner right field (flanking drapery), ΓOP-ΓI/AΣ across lower central field. Klose pp. 341 and 346, 15 (same dies); Pozzi (Boutin) 2892 (same dies). VF, toned, small edge chip at 11, flan stress crack at top.

McClean 4929 may be of this type--the NI is engraved very small, and very close to the bottom of the shield, so much so that Grose may not have noticed the letters when cataloging that coin.
