(878.1) THESSALY, Thessalian League. Mid – late 1st century BC. AR Stater (22mm, 5.80 g, 12h). Polyxenos and Eukolos, magistrates. Head of Zeus right, wearing oak wreath / ΘEΣΣA/ΛΩN, Athena Itonia striding right, hurling spear held in her right hand, shield on her left arm; ΠOΛV-ΞEN[OV] above spear, EKOΛO[Σ] (sic) in exergue. See Coin Hoards II, fig. 12, 9 var. (same obv. die; Eukolos’ name not misspelled). VF, lightly toned, struck from a worn obv. die.

Head of Zeus right, wearing oak wreath; countermark to left: grain ear in rectangular incuse / ΘEΣΣA/ΛΩN, Athena Itonia striding right, hurling spear held in her right hand, shield on her left arm; ΠOΛV-ΞEN[OV] above spear, [E]VKOΛ[OΣ] in exergue.
