Triton XV, Lot: 795. Estimate $100.
Sold for $1200. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

ISLANDS off THESSALY, Ikos. 4th century BC. Æ Chalkous (13mm, 2.53 g, 7h). Bearded and wreathed head of Poseidon r. / IKI retrograde below, Ω l. up, [N] r. down (?), trident head upwards, between two opposed dolphins swimming downwards; all in incuse circle. These dies unknown and unpublished. Good Fine, dark olive green patina; surfaces with minor roughness.

This is probably a slightly earlier version of the previous coin as its fabric is thicker and the head of Poseidon more compact. Rogers dates the Peparethos early bronze to 361 - 340 BC and the early coins of Ikos probably fall somewhere between those dates with the earliest types such as this coin struck circa 360 BC.
