Triton XV, Lot: 580. Estimate $100.
Sold for $150. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

THESSALY, Phalanna. Last quarter of the 3rd century BC. Æ Dichalkon (17mm, 4.92 g, 8h). Youthful male head r., border of dots / ΦAΛANNAIoN from above l., r. down circular, head of nymph r., her hair bound in a sakkos tied at the back. This particular style and writing not found in consulted references. Fine, dark green patina; traces of flat striking on both sides and a few small marks or pits; very rare with this ending of the ethnic.

Acquired in a Tübingen coin shop without a name, September 1994, for DM 100.

The archaizing ending of the ethnic is not an indication of early chronology but just a whim or affectation of the die cutter
