CNG 88, Lot: 262. Estimate $5000.
Sold for $3500. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

ELIS, Olympia. 106th Olympiad. 356 BC. AR Stater (23mm, 11.77 g, 3h). Hera mint. Head of Hera right, wearing sphendone / Eagle standing left, head right, within olive wreath. Seltman, Temple 313 var. (dies EX¹/- [unlisted rev. die]); BCD Olympia 130 (same obv. die); SNG Delepierre 2168 (same obv. die); HGC 5, 372. VF, lightly toned.

Though not a new obverse type for the Hera mint, the head of Hera on Seltman’s die EX differs from previous issues in that it “is clearly influenced by the heads of the nymph Olympia.” The stephanos of Hera is absent, replaced with the sphendone of the nymph, paralleling the change which took place at the Zeus mint as well.
