KINGS of MACEDON. temp. Alexander III – Philip III. Circa 325-320 BC. AV Stater (17mm, 8.55 g, 1h). In the name of Alexander III. Kition mint. Helmeted head of Athena right / Nike standing left, holding wreath and stylis; KT monogram below left wing. Price 3100; Newell, Some 7 (same rev. die as illustration). Good VF, underlying luster, tiny flan flaws on obverse.

In his section on Kition, Price references No. 3100 (no A on obv./KT monogram on rev.) to Newell 2, and No. 3105 (A on obv./KT monogram on rev.) to Newell 7, but this only partially correct, as the presence of the A on the obverse is not determinative of the correct Newell number, but, rather, the position of the name of Alexander. Newell 2 has the name to the left of Nike, while Newell 7 has the name on the right. At the same time, Newell 7 notes that an 'A' is present on the obverse only sometimes. Thus, a stater without the 'A' must be Price 3100, it can be either Newell 2 or Newell 7, depending on the position of Alexander's name.
