IONIA, Uncertain. Circa 600-550 BC. Hekte (Electrum, 2.62 g), Phokaic standard. Lion seated to right, with open jaws and with his tail curled up over his back Rev. Quadripartite incuse square. Gulbenkian 724. SNG von Aulock 1776. Extremely rare, probably the third example known. Struck from crudely made but powerful dies. Extremely fine.

From a Swiss private collection..

This extraordinary animal is surely a lion, as can be seen from its square, block-like head and open jaws. Its pose is similar to the lions that support Cybele’s throne on eastern sculptures, and this lion may well be sacred to her.
