Galerius. AD 305-311. AV Aureus (19mm, 5.41 g, 6h). Decennalia issue. Nicomedia mint. Struck AD 305. MAXIMIA NVS AVGVSTVS, laureate head right / X/MAXI/MIAN/I AVG in four lines; SMN below; all within laurel wreath; at top, NK inscribed in medallion. RIC VI 38; Depeyrot 9/6; Calicó 4962. Near EF, lightly toned, traces of deposits. Very rare.

From the Collection of a Northern California Gentleman.

While Galerius’ actual decennalia should have been celebrated in AD 303, while he was caesar, it appears that he chose to celebrate it upon his elevation to augustus in AD 305.
