Edward "the Martyr". 975-978. AR Penny (1.36 gm). Canterbury mint. Æthelstan, moneyer. +ELDPELRD REX ANGLORX (OR ligate), diademed bust left / + ÆDELSTAN M-O CÆNT•, small cross pattée. North 763; BMC Anglo-Saxon II -; Seaby 1142. EF, light porosity. Extremely rare. [See color plate 20] ($2500)

Edward was the son of Eadgar and his first wife, Aethelflaed. Upon his father's death he was crowned king. Some, however, including Queen Aelfthryth, Eadgar's second wife, supported his half-brother, Aethelred II. When on 18 March 978 Edward went to visit Aethelred and Aelfthryth, he was pulled from his horse and murdered by their supporters.
