Eadwig was the son of Eadmund, but was only 6 years old when his father was killed and thus was passed over for succession. He came to the throne at the age of 15 when his uncle, Eadred, died. He had ruled for only two years when the Mercians and Northumbrians proclaimed their allegiance to his brother, Eadgar. Eadwig continued to rule south of the Thames for another two years.
