GORDIAN III. 238-244 AD. AR Antoninianus (4.34 gm). Antioch mint. IMP CAES M ANT GORDIANVS AVG, radiate, draped and cuirassed bust right, seen from behind / VIRT-V-S AVG, Virtus standing left, holding branch and reversed spear; shield leaning against leg. RIC IV -; RSC -. Not listed in the major references. EF. ($250)

From the George His Collection of coins of Gordian III, with his ticket. Ex Numismatik Lanz Auktion 68 (6 June 1994), lot 650.

This coin is identical to RIC IV 39 from Rome, but it is not listed as being from Antioch. There is a coin in the British Museum which was certainly struck at Antioch and shares the same obverse die with the present specimen, thus verifying its origin.
