SYRIA, Seleukid Kings. Antiochos XII. 87/6-84 BC. AR Tetradrachm (15.85 gm). Year 227 (86/85 BC). Damascus mint. Diademed head right / BASILEWS ANTIOCOU EPIFANOUS right, FILOPATOROS KALLINIKOU left, cult statue of Hadad standing facing on double basis, flanked by two bull foreparts, holding grain stalk in right hand; monogram outer left, monogram and SKC in exergue; all within a laurel wreath. SNG Spaer -; Houghton & Spaer, New Silver Coins of Demetrios III and Antiochos XII at Damascus," in Schweizer Münzblätter 157 (February 1990). pg. 4, 5 (A5/P5 - this coin): Houghton CSE, 864 var. Toned good VF, original hoard patina around devices. Extremely rare. Perhaps the rarest 'type' coin in the entire Seleukid series! ($5000)

Houghton & Spaer record only seven known Hadad tetradrachms, three of which are in museums. An inferior piece from the houghton collection sod for $7500 in Numismatics Fine Arts XVIII, lot 401.
