229, Lot: 480. Estimate $75.
Sold for $56. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

Michael II the Amorian, with Theophilus. 820-829. Æ Follis (22mm, 5.58 g, 6h). Constantinople mint. Struck 821-829. Crowned facing busts of Michael, wearing chlamys, and Theophilus, wearing loros / Large M; cross above, X/X/X to left, N/N/N to right; A below. DOC 8; SB 1618 (Michael I and Theophylactus). Fine, green patina.

Sear rejected the DOC attribution to Michael II and Theophilus, preferring the first Michael. However, specimens are known with the expanded name of the junior emperor- EOFIL, which can only be Theophilus. The problem, of course, is that this means there are no known folles for the joint reign of Michael I and Theophylactus.
