229, Lot: 4. Estimate $100.
Sold for $60. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

CELTIC, Northwest Gaul. Carnutes. Circa 100-50 BC. AR Quinarius (15mm, 1.35 g, 3h). Helmeted head left; SANTONO before / Horse advancing right; star of pellets below. D&T 3266; Depeyrot, NC V, 17; CCCBM II 441. Near VF, some roughness.

From the Jörg Müller Collection.

The common attribution of this type to the “Santones” is purely conjectural, based on the legend, which is also found on a few other issues. More recent catalogs place these coins under the Carnutes (see Depeyrot).
