Sold for $750. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

Galba. AD 68-69. AR Denarius (20mm, 3.26 g, 7h). Uncertain mint in Spain or Gaul. Laureate head right, globe at point of bust / Clasped hands. Cf. RIC I 30 and 53; cf. RSC 31. VF, harshly cleaned, extraordinary broad flan.

The orthographic peculiarities of this coin, notably the ligate form of the words GERMAN and EXERCITVVM in the legends, and the form of the obverse legend starting on the lower right with a central break, defy a precise identification of the mint. The ligate spellings are typical of the Gallic mint (probably at Lugdunum) while the form of the obverse legend is only found at the Spanish mint (perhaps Tarraco).
