EPEIROS, Ambrakia. Circa 360-338 BC. AR Stater (20mm, 8.02 g, 12h). Pegasos walking right; A below / Helmeted head of Athena left; A below chin; behind, the infant Iacchos squatting, his right hand extended. Pegasi II 87. VF, toned, obverse off center. Scarce.


Iacchos was identified with Dionysos, but according to myth was the child of Zeus and Demeter rather than Zeus and Semele. He was particularly venerated at the Eleusinian Mysteries, where on the sixth day his image was carried in a boisterous procession.
