212, Lot: 33. Estimate $75.
Sold for $47. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

KINGS of MACEDON. Alexander III ‘the Great’. 336-323 BC. AR Obol (9mm, 0.68 g, 1h). ‘Babylon’(?) mint. Lifetime issue, circa 325-323 BC. Head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin / Zeus Aëtophoros seated left; controls off the flan. Cf. Price 3606. VF, toned, porous.

From the D. Alighieri Collection.

As the control marks are of the flan, the attribution to Babylon is based on the similarity of style between this coin and Price 3606, dated 325-323 BC. Obols were, however, minted widely in the East, making such an attribution tentative.
