CRUSADERS, Venetians in the Levant. Two AV Ducats. Imitating Venice. Uncertain mint. Struck in the name of Lorenzo Priuli, 1556-1559. Both coins: St. Mark standing right, holding Gospels and presenting flag to Doge kneeling left; exergual line below / Christ standing facing, raising hand in benediction and holding Gospels, surrounded by elliptical halo containing stars. Lot includes the following varieties: (3.46 g). S/•/M/•/V/E/N/E/T D/V/X LΛVR • PRIOI / SIT T XPE DΛT Q TV REGIS ISTE DVC, footless Christ in open elliptical halo with six and six stars flanking and legend punched over parts of the design. // (3.45 g). S/M/V/E/N/E/T D/V/X LΛVR PRIO, pellet to left of flag / SIT T XPE DΛT Q TV REGIS ISTE DC, reverse type principally same as previous.. Cf. CNI VII 56; Ives -; Gamberini -; cf. Friedberg 1255.
