171, Lot: 331. Estimate $200.
Sold for $466. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

Mark Antony. 32-31 BC. AR Legionary Denarius (18mm, 3.44 g). Patrae(?) mint. Galley right / LEG XVIII LYBICAE, legionary eagle between two standards. Crawford 544/11; CRI 375; Sydenham 1240; RSC 53. VF, toned, banker’s mark. Scarce.

From the Karl Sifferman Collection.

Not to be confused with a similar legion under the command of Octavian, this Antonian legion was either disbanded or incorporated into another legion after Actium. The cognomen LYBICAE suggests it was raised in North Africa.
