ANGLO-SAXON, Kings of All England. Cnut. 1016-1035. AR Penny (1.11 g, 12h). Quatrefoil type. Bath mint; Aethelstan, moneyer. Struck circa 1017-1023. +CNVT REX LNGL•ORVM, crowned bust left within quatrefoil / +EÐESTA:N ON BLÐ, voided long cross with triple-crescent ends and pellet at center, over quatrefoil. SCBI 13 (Copenhagen), 33 (same dies); Blackburn & Lyon Bath A style; Grinsell 3; BMC 6; North 781; SCBC 1157. EF, lightly toned, slight wave in flan. Rare.

This coin is from the earliest issue of Cnut’s coinage at Bath. Blackburn and Lyon note that the early bust style at Bath (style A) was of high artistic quality compared to contemporary issues of other mints, but was short-lived, being replaced by dies of typically crude style (Bath B).
