Sold for $151. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

SYRIA, Decapolis. Nysa-Scythopolis. Gaius (Caligula). AD 37-41. Æ 13mm (1.95 g). Dated CY 103 (AD 39/40). Laureate head left; GR (date) before / Laureate head right. RPC I 4830.1 (this coin); Barkay 8. Near VF, dark green patina. Very rare- Barkay cites just three known examples.

From the J. S. Wagner Collection.

Barkay notes the reverse head is laureate, and thus unlikely to be Dionysus, as per RPC. She suggests a head of Augustus, although Tiberius would also be a possibility.
