LAKONIA, Lakedaimon (Sparta). Nabis (?). 207-192 BC. Æ Trichalkon (19mm, 5.81 g). Jugate heads of the Dioskouroi right, wearing laureate pilei with stars / Two amphorae entwined with serpents. Grunauer -; BCD Peloponnesos -, SNG Copenhagen -. Near VF, brown patina.

From the J. S. Wagner Collection.

This unpublished bronze of Lakedaimon seem to parallel Grunauer’s rare Group XII chalkous, with helmeted head of Athena and single amphora. The more common later trichalkoi, Group XV, are on a lighter standard, have a wreath surrounding the reverse type and bear magistrates’ initials.
