Paduan Medals. Claudius. After 1535. Cast Æ ‘Sestertius’ (36mm, 21.22 g). Laureate head right / Legend in nine lines within wreath for Claudius’ restoration of the Aqua Virgo. Klawans-. VF, brown patina. Later cast.

The Aqua Virgo, built by Agrippa and restored by Claudius, was the sole functioning Roman aqueduct in medieval Rome. Pope Paul III ordered extensive restorations to the aqueduct in 1535, completed by Pius IV in the 1560’s. These restorations are the likely reason for the striking of this Claudian “sestertius”.
