Romanus IV Diogenes, with Eudocia, Michael VII, Constantius, and Andronicus. 1068-1071. AV Histemenon Nomisma (28mm, 4.38 g, 6h). Constantinople mint. Michael standing facing, holding labarum and akakia, flanked by Constantius to left and Andronicus to right, each holding globus cruciger and akakia; all wearing loros and standing on pelleted base; N(?) in exergue / Christ standing facing on suppedion, crowning Romanus to right and Eudocia to left, each wearing loros and holding globus cruciger. DOC 2 var. (nothing in exergue); SB 1861 var. (same). Some luster, flan flaw on reverse, a few light scratches, minor deposit at edge. Near EF.

From the David Welsh Collection. Ex Geneva Collection (Heritage 351, 3 June 2004), lot 12400.

An interesting variety with what appears to be an intentional cut ‘N’ in the exergue. Additionally, this die seems to feature visibly younger depictions of Constantius and Andronicus. Whereas most dies clearly depict the younger rulers in their early teenage years, this die represents them as noticeably younger. A search of the primary and secondary references including BN, Raeder, and Ratto did not yield any similar examples. Furthermore, a CoinArchives search additionally failed to produce additional examples of this die.
