Constantine X Ducas. 1059-1067. AV Histamenon Nomisma (24mm, 4.35 g, 6h). Constantinople mint. Christ Pantokrator enthoned facing / Constantine standing facing, wearing crown and loros, holding globus cruciger and labarum with pellet on shaft; droplet below globus cruciger. DOC 1b.4; Füeg 1.C; SB 1847. Lustrous, obverse doubling, reverse 180° rotated double strike. VF.

From the David Welsh Collection. Ex Geneva Collection (Heritage 351, 3 June 2004), lot 12393.

An fascinating reverse rotated double strike with the reverse struck originally at 12h before being forcefully double struck at 6h as is usual for Byzantine coinage. The most evident component of the original strike is found in the loros end fold which is not only hanging downwards as normal, but also emanating upwards as well. Additionally, some of the lower part of Constantine’s figure is faintly visible near his head.

Closing Date and Time: 19 July 2023 at 12:38:00 ET.
