KINGS of MACEDON. Philip III Arrhidaios. 323-317 BC. AR Tetradrachm (26mm, 16.88 g, 12h). In the name and types of Alexander III. Miletos mint. Struck under Asandros, circa 323-319 BC. Head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin / Zeus Aëtophoros seated left, legs parallel; grain ear in left field. Price 2099a; ADM I Series III. Lightly toned, minor porosity, scrapes, a couple scratches on obverse, zig-zag pattern on reverse. VF.

From the Don T. Hayes Collection.

Price 2099 comprises two varieties, one with Zeus’ legs parallel (or spread), the other with his legs crossed, though this distinction is not differentiated in his corpus. However, the examples in his plates show both varieties, with 2099a having parallel legs, while 2099b has crossed legs.

The zig-zag pattern cut into the field on the reverse of this coin is known on other examples of Alexander and Ptolemy type tetradrachms. The pattern is typically located in the same position of the reverse. The meaning of the pattern is uncertain, but the similarity of its composition across these issues suggests that it was placed on the coins in a deliberate attempt to mark them in a recognized manner. As these all occur on Ptolemaic issues and Alexanders from eastern mints, the source for the mark probably is in that region.
