THRACE, Maroneia. Late 2nd-mid 1st centuries BC. AR Tetradrachm (25mm, 15.98 g, 12h). Head of young Dionysos right, wearing ivy wreath with small monogram between the grape bunches above his brow / Dionysos standing half-left, holding grapes and narthex stalks; monograms flanking. Schönert-Geiss 984–5 (obv. die V3); SNG Copenhagen –; Hunterian 13. Toned, underlying luster, double struck, some minor marks. VF.

Ex Gorny & Mosch 229 (10 March 2015), lot 1144. Lot includes a David Sear certificate of authenticity.

The small monogram between the grape bunches is quite unusual element added to the standard design, and is not mentioned in any of the references. See lots 54 and 55, below, for a similar instance of marked obverse dies. One wonders whether the control is actually the mark or signature of an engraver?

Closing Date and Time: 19 July 2023 at 10:14:40 ET.
