Antoninus Pius. AD 138-161. Æ Sestertius (34mm, 28.19 g, 11h). Rome mint. Struck circa AD 147. ANTONINVS AVG PI VS P P TR P COS IIII, laureate head right / ANNO NA AVG FELIX, S C across field, Annona, draped, standing left, holding up tablet and rudder upright; to left, foreparts of two ships, one with apluster, the other bearing modius with grain ears and poppy; to right, lighthouse in three stories with beacon light. RIC III 757; Banti 32; BMCRE 1655. Brown patina, scratches and scrapes, smoothing, small drill hole on reverse, now partially filled, and at 12 o’clock on edge to attach a loop for mounting. Near VF. Extremely rare. None in CoinArchives. Banti knew of two examples: one in the Gnecchi Collection, the other, in the British Museum. This is perhaps the third known.

Lighthouses are rare on reverses of Roman Imperial coins.
