KYRENAICA, Kyrene. temp. Magas. Circa 294-275 BC. AR Didrachm (19.5mm, 7.84 g, 11h). Head of Zeus Karneios left / Silphion plant; stars across upper fields. BMC 237; SNG Copenhagen 1237. Light marks, areas of find patina. VF.

The Silphion plant is engraved in a variety of ways on the various dies of this series. It would seem the master engravers cut the obverse dies while leaving the reverse dies to their junior apprentices who probably copied from a master design - which their talent rarely matched. Several candidates for the reverse master are possible. The die seen here is one of those candidates as it is correctly sized for the intended coin size and is highly artistic.
