LYDIA, Tralles. Claudius, with Messalina. AD 41-54. Æ (18mm, 5.82 g, 12h). Struck AD 43-49. Draped bust of Messalina right vis-à-vis laureate head of Claudius left / Claudius, togate, standing facing, head left, holding grain ears. Kurth 157 corr. (Britannicus rev.); RPC I 2654; SNG Copenhagen 691 corr. (same). Rough brown patina, scratches. Fine.

From the Conti Collection.

A note from RPC: “The figure of the reverse is conventionally described as Britannicus, but it is an adult togate figure, so presumably it is more likely to be a figure of the emperor Claudius; the inscription Brettanikos would then be a continuation of the obverse, carried over onto the rev.: Ti Klau Kai Sebas/Bretannikos Kaisareon.”

Closing Date and Time: 29 March 2023 at 11:24:20 ET.
